What’s the difference between Accredited and Master Electrician and an Emergency electrician?

Posted on under Installations, Services

When you’re looking for a qualified electrician to carry out electrical repairs, it can be confusing to know what level of service is required. You might be wondering when you’d need an emergency electrician, or what services a Level 2 Electrician can carry out. Here is a full breakdown of the types of licensed electricians and what services they offer.

The Different Types Of Qualified Electricians And What Services They Offer

You might see three main titles appear online, ‘Accredited’, ‘Master’ and ‘Emergency Electrician’. All of these require a Level 2 Electrician Accredited Service Provider certification to carry out the services listed below.

Accredited Electricians

Accredited Electricians (also known as Level 2 Electricians) are qualified to carry out all levels of electrical installation and repair. They are licensed to attend electrical issues at commercial, industrial and residential sites for all commercial electrician needs. You may need a Level 2 Electrician to connect or disconnect your property to the network, to fix or install service lines, or when installing an electricity meter. If you hear someone referred to as a data cabling electrician, they will also be a qualified electrician with a Level 2 accreditation.

Emergency Electrician

The accredited electrician Sydney who shows up on your online search should be certified to carry out emergency electrical repairs. An emergency electrician predominantly refers to those that are on-call to fix emergency electrical issues. They may be on call 24 hours, 365 days a year to fix problems that pose a risk to the property owners.

A 24 hours electrician may visit your premises for the following reasons:

  • If you spot a humming noise, sparks or electric shocks coming from electric outlets
  • If you smell burning coming from an appliance, suggesting overheating
  • When your main electricity supply is down or fuses blow
  • When your electrical safety breakers will not stay on

As you can see, the difference between the two types here is related to the level of callout. An emergency electrician will come to fix urgent issues, while a typical callout will generally be for installations or disconnections for premises.

Master Electrician

A Master Electrician is a qualified electrician that has been accredited by Master Electricians Australia. Your electrician Sydney has to be a Level 2 Electrician working in the industry for at least three years. They also need to meet several criteria, including offering energy advice to clients, using a safety management system and having twelve-month guarantees on all their work. Once they reach the standards required, they are audited regularly to ensure their standards are maintained.

Why Should You Hire A Licensed Electrician?

You might consider doing the electrics yourself or using an unlicensed friend to carry out the work. Although this may seem cheaper, in the long run, this could be incredibly costly as if anything is done poorly, you may have to call out a qualified electrician to carry out the work again, from scratch, to fix the previous job. Most importantly, any work carried out by an unlicensed electrician might become a safety issue. Any faulty work might be an issue after days, weeks, months or even years down the line, leaving you to call out a 24 hours electrician to fix the problem at a higher cost.

Why Are Level 2 Electricians Working As Plumbers?

Becoming an electrician and a plumber requires years of study and licensing as two separate disciplines. However, due to the high demand for tradespeople, you may find your licensed electrician is working as a plumber. You may find that your qualified electrician is a registered plumber, which means they are working under the supervision of a licensed plumber. Alternatively, you may well find that your Level 2 Electrician has also achieved a license in plumbing as a multi-skilled tradesperson.

Do You Need A Particular Type Of Electrician To Repair Your Emergency Lighting?

If you own a commercial or industrial residence, you may require regular servicing or need repair for your emergency lighting from a commercial electrician. If you have emergency lighting, alarms, or safety systems in place, then you will need to hire a qualified level 2 electrician to repair them to ensure they are working efficiently in times of emergency.
