What is structured cabling & how can it help your business?

Posted on under Services

These days, the vast majority of medium to large sized businesses – both commercial and industrial – and institutions could not operate effectively without a data and communication system of some kind. Increasingly, the solution for such businesses and organisations, many of which operate across multiple levels or locations, is a structured data cabling system. So what does this mean and what are the benefits for businesses and organisations?

The ability to communicate efficiently is essential to the success of any business, industry or institution. This is where structured cabling comes in, as it connects every device in a business’ data and communications system via a single bundle of data cables, providing access to each element of the network from one port. Compared to traditional point-to point-cabling, structured cabling is more organised and flexible; it allows for the addition of new machines and technology without interrupting business operations and, when designed properly, is future-proofed for technological advances.

The benefits of structured data cabling

As mentioned above, structured cabling is both more organised and flexible than traditional cabling. It also improves the speed of data and voice transfer throughout your business and therefore improves the service to your clients. Similarly, it increases productivity, as its centralised nature means there is less risk of interruption and less chance of network downtime.

Another advantage of structured data cabling is its simplicity, making it easier to locate an issue when one occurs, which in turn, adds to the cost-effectiveness of the system. It is also a far more aesthetically pleasing system than traditional cabling, as it removes the need to have multiple cables and ports at every desk or work station. This improves the safety of the work environment as well, with less chance of fire, electric shocks, or employees or visitors tripping and falling.

Regulations & Standards – structured data cabling

In Australia, data and telecommunications cabling is strictly regulated by the Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA), which stipulates that ‘any cabling work in the telecommunications, fire, security and data industries must be performed by a registered cabler’.

Registered cablers must comply with the Telecommunications Cabling Provider Rules 2014 and meet the product and installation standards set out in AS/CA S008: 2010 and AS/CA S009: 2013. This level of regulation and compliance promotes the safety of data cable systems both during and after installation, and ensures the integrity of the network for all Australians.

As licensed cablers, Caslec are experts in the design and installation of data and communication networks in commercial, administrative, educational and industrial buildings. Working within budget and to deadline, we install state-of-the-art structured data cable networks, giving our clients the ability to adapt to a changing technological landscape and the competitive advantage that brings with it.
